The latest news, announcements and press releases from Bormioli Pharma.
UPM Biochemicals, Selenis and Bormioli Pharma have partnered to produce the world’s first pharmaceutical bottles made from partially wood-based PET. This bottle takes sustainability in pharma packaging to a whole new level. As the high regulatory and performance requirements for pharma packaging may limit the use of new or recycled materials, this bottle uses standard PET which is made with UPM’s world first wood-based BioMEG, UPM BioPuraTM, to take a real step forward in the sustainable transformation of the pharmaceutical sector.
Bormioli Pharma today announced a partnership with Chiesi, an international, research-focused biopharmaceutical company (Chiesi Group), to supply Carbon Capture PET bottles. These will be used to package a medication indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, as well as vasomotor rhinitis.
This supply marks the first time a Carbon Capture PET bottle will be used for pharmaceutical purposes, offering environmental benefits and high safety levels for patients. Indeed, Carbon Capture PET bottles provide a 21.9% decrease in kg of CO2 eq compared to traditional PET, while extractables’ levels are comparable with the ones registered by standard PET[1].
Carbon Capture PET is produced by capturing carbon emissions, which are then transformed into BioMEG, the key molecule for PET production, through a fermentation process. The material is recyclable and maintains the same mechanical and physical performance as traditional PET.
Andrea Lodetti, CEO of Bormioli Pharma, added, "We are honoured to partner with Asamedic in bringing Coxor™ to market. This project exemplifies the vital impact that early collaboration between pharmaceutical companies and packaging manufacturers can have on making medicines more accessible and effective, especially when dealing with life-saving drugs."
Coxor® has been regulatorily approved in a European DCP process and test launched in Norway. Asamedic is now searching for licensing- and distribution partners in Europe and the rest of the world.
The results of the partnership between Asamedic and Bormioli Pharma will be showcased at CPHI Milan 2024 (6 – 10 October 2024), the premier global event for the pharmaceutical supply chain. Both companies will be present at the trade fair, with Asamedic at booth 16G10 and Bormioli Pharma at booth 20A2.

Bormioli Pharma and Loop Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq: LOOP) (“Loop”), a clean technology company whose mission is to accelerate a circular plastics economy by manufacturing 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (“PET”) plastic and polyester fiber, today announced that an innovative pharmaceutical packaging bottle manufactured with 100% recycled virgin quality Loop™ PET resin will be unveiled within the Bormioli booth at Pharmapack Europe 2024.
The pharmaceutical industry is increasingly recognizing the importance of adopting sustainable practices and materials to reduce its environmental impact. Loop's 100% recycled virgin quality PET can help support pharmaceutical companies with a sustainable packaging alternative and address the growing demand for environmentally responsible choices in the industry. The Infinite Loop™ technology upcycles the lowest quality PET and polyester fiber waste into 100% recycled virgin quality Loop™ PET resin. A recent test, executed by a worldwide leader in laboratory testing, confirms that Loop™ PET resin has successfully met the strict standards and requirements outlined by the EU Pharmacopeia (Ph.Eur. 3.1.15, Polyethylene Terephthalate for Containers for Preparations not for Parenteral Uses) and US Pharmacopeia (USP , Plastic Materials of Construction) and is compliant for use in packaging applications in the pharmaceutical industry. Loop™ PET resin helps create circularity for low value waste while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and can save up to 360,000 tonnes of CO2 per year compared to virgin PET made from fossil fuels [1].
